Lama Temple Overview

A comprehensive guide to Lama Temple, one of Beijing's most important Tibetan Buddhist temples.

Yonghe Temple, also known as Lama Temple, is a famous Tibetan Buddhist temple located in the Dongcheng District of Beijing. Built in 1694 during the Qing Dynasty, it was originally the residence of Prince Yongzheng before he became emperor.

The temple is renowned for its beautiful Tibetan-style architecture, religious artifacts, and peaceful atmosphere. It houses numerous Buddhist statues, scriptures, and artifacts, including the famous 18-meter tall Maitreya Buddha carved from a single sandalwood tree.

Today, it serves as both a functioning monastery and a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world who come to admire its architecture and experience its spiritual atmosphere.

Recommended Tour Route

The Lama Temple is best explored by following a route that covers the main halls and courtyards. Start at the main entrance and proceed through the various courtyards.

Key attractions include the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Hall of Harmony and Peace, and the Hall of Eternal Blessing.

Don't miss the famous Maitreya Buddha in the Hall of Eternal Blessing, which is 18 meters tall and carved from a single sandalwood tree. The temple also features beautiful Tibetan-style architecture and numerous religious artifacts.

Important Notes for Visitors

  • 1 Incense: Free incense is available at the entrance. Receive it with both hands. Use 3 sticks per location. Do not blow out incense with your mouth; gently fan it instead.
  • 2 Incense Offering Etiquette: Hold incense in your left hand, support with your right hand, and raise it above your head. Women during menstruation may still worship. Each hall has different purposes; please research beforehand.
  • 3 Prayer Beads: Available at 3 distribution centers. Expect queues, especially on holidays.
  • 4 Attire: Dress modestly. Avoid shorts, revealing clothing, hats, and sunglasses.
  • 5 Rules: Do not step on thresholds. Do not walk backwards. No photography inside halls, but allowed outside.
  • 6 Wishing: Be clear and specific when making wishes.
